Xi'an, in ancient times known as Chang'an, is situated in the southern part of Central China’s Guanzhong Plain in the province of Shanxi, with the Qinling Mountains to the north and the Weihe River to the south. As one of the six ancient capitals in China, Xian was home to 12 imperial capitals over a period of 1,120 years. It is a world-famous tourist city. It was called Chang'an, meaning "Forever Peace" in those old days. Xian is the largest and most developed city in the central to the northwestern part of China and is ranked among the 10 largest cities in the nation.
Xi'an is situated in the center of the Guanzhong Plains, surrounded by Mountains in the south and the Wei River in the north. Xi'an is also a city blessed with a pleasant climate most of the year round and it's possible to pleasurably visit this city at almost any time of the year. The coldest month here is January, with an average temperature of O degrees C although Xi'an has only a minimal snow level. The hottest and most unpleasant month is June, with an average temperature of 26 degrees C. Xi'an covers an area of 3,854.5 sq mi. Xi'an is subdivided into 13 districts.[1] Xi'an is nested between a flood plain created by the eight surrounding rivers and streams, most of which have been too polluted to be used as sources of fresh water. The city borders the northern foot of the Qinling Mountains to the south, and the banks of Wei River to the north. Hua Shan (??), one of the five sacred Taoist mountains, is located 100 km away to the east of the city. Population in Xian is 8.07 million.
